My perception of the most typical or the true nature of a 21st century American most often leads me to believe that he or she has some form of technological knowledge, whether it be a computer, cell phone, I-Pod or any of the many other advanced contraptions that are now very essential to everyday life in our great country. It is my belief that technology is great for information purposes, speed and delivery of important financial transactions, or for quicker access to knowledge. However, the electronic and technology era that we as a nation are solidified in together is also of great concern for me. Many children and adults are dangerously obese as a result. These individuals find it easier to be successful playing a computer game rather than using their imagination and creativity to put together a real life game involving physical activity. Advances in medical procedures have given American citizens a chance for a longer life, therefore, obesity goes somewhat unnoticed and beliefs that a pill can cure all becomes more believable to those at risk. I am not fooled just because our countries' life expectancy has gone up. Advances in weapons and defense concerns me a great deal as well. Countries are able to strike anywhere in the world with their particular atomic weapons. We as a country are so advanced technologically that we are in serious danger of collapsing if our electronic devices can be frozen by terrorism or any advancing alien nation. I believe our country should teach more about what to do in case their were no technology available.
The typical 21st century American is also dealing with more work-load for the family. As a result individuals and families spend less time together and more time alone. Many of these people are stressed to make timely payments for bills and many turn to drugs or violence or escape into isolation with no one around to comfort them or to show them a positive alternative. What if the government would have given all of that bail-out money to families instead of the mortgage and bank companies? Americans would have spent the money, and made deposits or investments to get the economy back in the red and the their stresses would have gone away.
We are still a country of many diverse backgrounds. As minorities grow Americans in the 21st century must keep working towards equal rights and working together to eliminate prejudice. Many other issues face the 21st century Americans. Global warming is a challenge along with air and land pollution. It is critical that this generation of Americans find ways to address these everyday battles as natural disasters continue to be the result of man-made disasters. Illegal drug use is rampant in the 21st century and threatens to alienate Americans even more if not addressed on an individual basis. As we strive to eliminate this moral and devastating problem people must be bold enough to stand up to these control freaks and stop them from distributing these poisons to our citizens. Early visual education about the effects of drugs will help to keep potential users from starting and more positive role models must step forward. The majority of people in America have been raised to love through religious beliefs and want to help. Where will they find the time? 21st century Americans can barely find the time to work enough to pay their bills.
It is also my belief that 21st century Americans live somewhat in fear of their fellow man and have a feeling of impending doom as the 2012 facts are realized by a greater population. These individuals should keep working towards their goals and take care of business but at the same time be ready in case the destruction of a natural disaster should effect their life.
21st Americans are more educated, apparantly less moral and more self-centered, paid more but work more, but not wiser.

I agree that the 21st quitessential american has very technological empowerment in their lives. It seems that the communication bar keeps getting higher with technology and communication. I do believe it is great in some aspects but is technology taking over our lives? Is electronics starting to run our lives? It seems as the years continue we are heading that way.
ReplyDeleteI find your thoughts on drug prevention interesting. I recently did a speech on the use of treatment over prison for minor drug offenders, and overwhelmingly the drug offenders who underwent treatment had greater success at getting clean and staying that way. I think we should educate people more about drugs to help prevent this problem.
